Here is our dictionary of fic terms. If there is a word you are unsure of, or you can help us with some words we are unsure of (found at the bottom), please send us a note with "Dictionary" in the subject line, and we'll get it up as soon as we can!

A/U: Alternate Universe; Non-Cannon
Beta: To be edited
Beta-Reader: An editor; checks for missed spelling, grammar, and punctuation mistakes.
Challenge: syn. Contest An idea submitted for others to write. May or may not be challenging to write. Usually has a reward.
Collaboration: abv. Collab Works written by 2 or more authors working together. i.e ~Shidobukatsu and ~bluetiger-eyes think of a good plot. Together they sketch it out and write it up.
Crack Fic: abv. Crack Something totally out of the ordinary and insane, as if you wrote the story while on crack.
Drabble: works 100 - 200 words long (give or take)
F/F: female/female
F/M: female/male
Fandom: the subject of your liking and story. i.e ~WishmasterKami's number one fandom is the DCU
Fem-Slash: f/f relationships. Applies to all fandoms except for the anime/manga fandoms. Ranges from medium - hard core (NC-17 - R)
Fic: works 1,500 - 5,000 words per chapter (give or take)
Ficlet: works 200 - 500 words long (give or take)
Fluff: applies to all pairings and fandoms. Cutesy, sickly-sweet, sappy, or love stories.
Hard Core: Very explicit details, Rated R only.
Hentai: Japanese term for pornographic works. Applies only to anime/manga fandoms. Hard core, Rated R only.
Hiatus: On standby, temporary leave.
M/F: male/female
M/M: male/male
Medium Core: Semi-Explicit, Semi-Graphic (PG-13 - NC-17)
Mpreg: Male pregnancy
Non-Con Non-Consensual Sex (NC-17 - R)
OC: Original Character
OoC: Out of Character
One Shot: works 500 - 1,500 words long (give or take)
POV: Point Of View
Prompt: A word or phrase on which the idea or plotline of a fic is based on; usually found in challenges.
Round Robin: Story written by 2 or more authors, each writing a consecutive chapter. i.e ~WishmasterKami writes the first chapter of a story, then sends the story to ~Shidobukatsu who writes the second chapter. She then send it onto ~bluetiger-eyes for the third chapter, and then sends it back to ~WishmasterKami
Shojo-Ai: syn. Fluff Japanese terms for girls love. Only applies to works in the anime/manga fandoms. Soft - Medium core.
Shonen-Ai: syn. Fluff Japanese term for boys love. Only applies to works in the anime/manga fandoms. Soft - Medium core.
Slash: m/m relationships. Applies to all fandoms except for the anime/manga ones. Ranges from Medium - Hard core.
Smut: Synonym for sex
Soft Core: Light-Explicitness, Light Sexual content. Very little language. (PG-13)
Twincest: syn. Incest love/sex between twins. i.e Fred and George from Harry Potter
Voyeurism: Someone watching other people having sex, usually getting off on it. (NC-17 to R)

Yuri: Japanese term for f/f realationships. Only applies to anime/manga fandoms. Medium - Hard core.
